Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum Contagiosum is a contagious pox virus often called “water warts”.

Your child probably picked it up at a swimming pool - the infection often appears in kids who swim a lot. It’s really common - many children have it.

If one of your children has molluscum, but not others, bath them separately to avoid passing on the infection.

The lesions are usually small soft warts with a dot in the middle. They can be small but often grow quite large.

Children can have just a few of them or they may have dozens or even hundreds.

The lesions tend to turn up on the arms and torso or the tops of legs but rarely affect the face or scalp.

If your child has had eczema or if eczema runs in the family the lesions may turn up in the crook of the elbow or the backs of the knees - typically places where eczema occurs. Your child’s eczema may even flare up as a result of the infection.

The herbs can help to settle this problem too.

Occasionally a wart may inflame and look infected an dthen get better - all too often to be replaced by several more. This cycle can continue for months or even years.

Once molluscum does get better though, similarly to chicken pox, it almost never comes back. Molluscum rarely scars and shouldn’t be othcy unless your child’s eczema is being aggravated.

IMPORTANT!
Molluscum is harmless - don’t stop your child from swimming. It’s much more important that your child learns to swim - water is life-threatening, molluscum is not.
